Hey Allen in Neb. How are you? Hope OK. Remember me? You helped me out several times on my 656. Was wondering if you knew how to take out the drive right angle gear box in front of the timing box on a 684 IH. It does not appear to be bolted on like some. I wondered if it screwed in with threads or ? My tach is not working. I took it loose at the gauge and pulled out the cable. It seems fine I pushed it all way back in and started the engine. Does not turn. I figured it must be a gear in the drive box?? Any help would be appreciated as usual. Or someone who has a 684 and had this problem.

Thanks again

Jerry

Hi Jerry, see caseih.com parts at:
http://partstore.caseih.com/us/ReisEquipmentCarp/parts-search.html#epc::mr48004ar1285592bi1068815-1

IIRC, just unscrew tach cable and put wrench on item 4 reducer and the complete assembly unscrews from front timing cover, then you can take it apart on bench. If assembly unscrews from reducer parts 3 & 7 may fall into bottom of fan housing.

Good luck

Thanks. Us 70 yr old people don"t catch on like younger guys. LOL Thanks for all the help you folks offer and your time to do it

Well took the angle drive off and to the table. It seemed OK. Inserted fthe cable into angle drive and turned the cable . everything turned as it should. Greased and put back on the angle drive on to the reducer. Put the cable housing back on and inserted the cable into the tube all the way. Cranked the motor with tach still not hooked to gauge and it turned good. BUT it quit in about 15 seconds and would not turn any longer. Do you think I need a new tach and cable or what???
Your opinions will be appreciated

Jerry

Take the tach cable loose at the head;start the engine and observe the cable : see if it rotates.If it it does,stop engine, try to rotate the it to see if it slips at the drive end. You could try to hold it while engine idles, if you're careful and see if it slips.Look at the cable where it goes into the head and look for a worn spot on the squared end.It can slip there. Then you may need a new cable;sometimes the head is worn there too.A speedometer shop may be able to fix you up.Mark

Hi Jerry, you can test the tach by using a cordless drill connected to the end of the tach drive cable. Just make sure you have the drill turning in the correct direction.

The problem is still probably the drive mechanism.
I am 65 years old and it was more than 15 years ago that I repaired the drive mechanism. If I recall there was a pressed in end opposite the tach cable end and I had to remove it and inside the shaft that ran the tach cable ran off a worm gear and the shaft end was held in correct position by a fiber spacer as the fiber spacer wore the shaft was allowed to push away from the driving gear and the shaft stops turning. I fixed it by adding a metal spacer and resealing the end cap.

Good luck
