mower under a Cub

I finally got the local railroad museum to sell me their Cub tractor that hasn't been used for several years. I posted a few questions last year about getting it running. Only got it to run once so it needs some work. I will be bringing it home this weekend. I'm looking at using it to mow the lawn. Woods still makes a belly mower for these old tractors. What have I got for horsepower - 12 horse or so? Can I run a 60in mower with it on normal lawn grass or will it be too much. Anybody know what those kinds of mowers cost new. I've only been looking for them on the internet so far.

horsepower changed on the cubs. usually the later the model, the more horsepower.

if you do not let the grass get very tall, the cub will pull the mower.
cub pto runs different direction from other farmalls. mower must be identified for a cub.

It all depends on your expectations of it. My dad has a '48 Cub with the 42" Woods mower and in taller grass and weeds it is first gear only operation. But, if you never plan to take off more than a few inches of growth the 60" might be OK. IH did market the later Cubs with this size mower but they had more power than the early models.

The wOODS 59 will work great but remember its for mowing lawns as it is a finish mower where you only cut 2-3in at most it is not a 'BUSH HOG'. Hundreds of them are in use and owners all seem to b e happy. My Woods has been in operation for many yrs keep belts tight and use sharp blades and use the grease gun it will out last you. Your Cub probably needs fresh gas if it was setting for a long time without being ran mite need a good cleaning. Check the gas tank to see if its still nice and clean.

The Woods 59 can come with either right or left hand throw just blades and how you wind the belt and of course mounting kit for a Cub so you can get either throw for the Cub all depends on which way you want the grass to go.

Woods mower was around $3500 new as I recall. Maybe I'm way off but that's the number stuck in my head right now.

Of course they stopped running that Cub for a reason. Odds are that it doesn't have a freshly rebuilt engine in it. More likely it's getting a little tired and may not have enough left in it to run a 59" deck.

When the engine's running strong they work fine in normal grass on level ground. In fact we mowed my parents' place with my 1967 Cub for a few years before Dad bought a zero turn. It even handled the moderate hills there.

I mowed my own place with a 1966 Cub Lo-Boy for 4 years, and I sometimes had to take a 1/2 or 2/3 cut with the mower in order to have enough power.

I have a 1958 cub lowboy. It has been used since 1969 to mow 6 acres at the farm. I run it in 2nd gear, unless I have alot of obstacles or really tall grass (12" high). You cannot bush hog, but in quack grass it will run fine. The tractor has been rebuilt twice in it"s life, the second time was just 4 years ago. Key issue, make very sure that you have the mower sloping forward so that the blades cut when at the front of the mower and have plenty of clearance when the tip of the blade is rearward. The killer on Cub mowers is when the blades are always in contact with grass and the resistance sucks the HP out of the tractor. I like to tip mine on a 1-2" downward slope over the whole mower. By the way, I have lots of hills to mow!

it might run a 5' sickle bar mower.. but for a belly mower.. my 66 cub runs a 44? ( 41? ) " IH mower.

it's about all it wants if the heads are up on the bahia grass.

You will be disappointed . A 60 inch mower takes more power than that cub will give you. It takes all a farmall A has to run
an L59 mower, cutting week to week.

I have a 77 cub with the brush type mower that works pretty well I just sold a 55 cub with the 60 inch woods mower it would run it but has to wide open throttle and you can grass about 4 to 5 inches high
