Farmall super c will coast start but not start from starter

I have a 53 super c that I just bought this spring. It always has been hard to start so I tend to coast start it. Any ideas why it will not start when the starter is engaged but will coast start?

New 6v battery, coil, points, carb cleaned.

Battery cables being sized for 12volt is most common. They need to be 0gauge wire to move the amps from the under seat to the starter. A good ground strap bolted to more than tin bat box is also needed. Low voltage from poor #4 sized cables does not allow the ignition to fire the plugs. A dragging starter motor will also make the same issue, as will a battery going bad/not charged fully. Jim

You forgot to get the starter serviced starting with the saddle sw then like other post says get good cables. It would help also to run the ground cable to the starter.

Thanks for the feedback. One thing to note. The starter engages and turns well. Not sure if that matters. I will look into your suggestions

Yup, for one reason or another, the starter is drawing so much power that there's none left for a good spark.

We had the same problem with our Super C when we got it. It was converted to 12V, cranked over like crazy, but was hard to start.

When we swapped a starter in off another tractor, it would fire right up.

Turns out the armature was bent, and the starter was junk. I took a chance on a used one off ebay, and it's been fine ever since.

There are hold against meters that are not expensive and work very well. I own a Snap-On, and a generic, both read close to the same. Jim

Correct me if I am wrong but what are the Amp meters
on the 9N ford tractors and all the early Ford cars.
The wire runs threw the amp meter and measures the
current. I have a clamp on amp meter made by Hoyt
and it can be used to measure the current a starter
draws as well as measure the current a generator is
putting out. I know what you are talking about as I
have a AC clamp on amp meter for AC only.
