we recently installed a new head gasket on our ih 504. amongest
various other issues this tractor has one only being able to start
with ether after it sits for more then half a day. probably due to a
leaky injector line. today she started back firing through the intake
and make an incredibly loud popping noise any ideas would be so
helpful....

Did you keep the pushrods in order, and re-install them in the same location?

Did you carefully set the valve lash?

Have you looked under the valvecover to see if there's a bent pushrod, a pushrod out of place, a stuck valve, or a lash adjusting screw that has worked loose?

yes i kept pushrods in order and put them back in the same spot. i did however notice that the exhaust pushrod and rockerarm on the number four cylinder seemed short as there was almost not enough adjustment in the rocker arm to set the 0.27 clerance stated in the manual. that seemed very strange to me however i was kind of tossed into fixing this 504 with no prior knowledge of its history other then it ha a blowen headgasket. i was thinking valves as well. i can re adjust them as its proubly been 50 hours since i adjusted them when i finished the job. any ideas on the problem with number 4??
