Generator not charging

I am a IH man have many models I also have a early 8N Ford (Front mount dist)It has a VR instead of the cut out can. I know on the older IH you can ground the field terminal to see if it will charge. Is there anyway to test the FOrd gen I think the field is internally grounded on these, It is Pos grd.
Thank you

this would be one of those questions GREAT for the ford board!

8n uses an A circuit generator.

one side of the field is tied to the armature.

to full field it, ground the field stud at the case.,

to motor test the genny, use a bat and jump cables.. ground case, hit armature with other cable, then jump field to case. should spin like a motor.

Later fords 53+ with the NAA use a B circuit genny and it had one side of the field grounded to the case.

so you have your generator memories mixed up!

Thanks for your input I will post on the Ford board I just thought that John ,Bob M, or Janicholson with there vast electrical knowledge with help out but you have provided me with what I needed just ground the field and see what happans.

I own a IH product or 2 but am mostly a ford guy.

generators in general are easy basic technology that is platform independent...

figure out how the field circuit works and go..

Thank you again. I first polarized it as it h ad been setting for over a year with no battery in it no charges than I started the tractor and grounded the F terminal and she charged full scale after removing the jumper from ground it stayed high amps for a min or so than dropped back to 5 amps or so. I am putting 6.8V in the battery.
I also have 8N and it will only charge where the 3 brush is set.
I also have a 10-20,W9 ,WD9, M, W6 ,H ,W4, I4 ,super C and about 5 or 6 cub cadets so I guess I qualify to post on this board. I have gotten a lot of help here over the years.
Thanks Again.

your 8n with a 3 brush generator must be a very early 8n.. the vast majority of 8n had a 2 brush genny..
