farmall c hydraulic oil

I have a farmall c tractor . What I was asking how do u check the hydraulic oil I have drained the tank because I had a line leaking plus the fluid needed changed I know it may take about 8 pints is that right, also what kind of hydraulic oil should I use .Thanks for any help.

If the reservoir is empty, take a few minutes and remove the filter. It is on the right side and slides out after you remove 4 bolts. Hy-Tran or comparable fluid or a non-detergent 10 or 20 weight oil will work.

this sounds wrong but i pull the plug and stick my finger in and if the oil touch"s my finger i go with it

The hydraulic should be filled up to the bottom of the fill hole, until it doesn't quite start running back out.

Hytran or another fluid marked "Hytran compatible" or "meets MS-1209 standards" would be the way to go for fluid.

Tractor Supply has a "Traveler" brand for $39.99 a 5-gallon pail that seems to work okay for me.

As mentioned below use this as an apportunity to clean the filter and possibly the entire reservor. You can refill it with most any hydraulic fluid - I suggest Super Tech hydraulic fluid (NOT the R&O type)from Walmart. When this tractor was new I beleive the oil used "Touch Control Fuild" pretty much a slightly modified 20W nondetergent motor oil so any current automotive or ag hydraulic oil will be better than what was originally used.

I know a lot of people use the old Ford Type F transmission fluid because they can find it pretty cheap.

The original recommendation by IH was 10 weight, not 20 or above, although people have used them without problems. I prefer oil that meets hytran specs.
