on my old h i put in a new battery then checked the voltage 12,50 volts while it sitting there started it up checked the battery 12.50 volts with it running thought maybe i need a new alternator but my amp gage is stuck does anybody think i need a new alternator or could it be my amp gage isnt working causing a problen can i jump around my amp gage to check that way any suggestions would be helpful cause Im just a half--- mechnaic

A new battery will show the 12.5 volts you found. Farmall H tractors are not equipped with alternators, or 12v systems. Thus it will be necessary to show us pictures of the way it is wired, and what type it is. There is no way it should stay at 12.5 volts, when running, it should be at 14.2 to 14.6 volts. Tell us more so we can give good advice. Jim

amp gauge is a pass through device. Jumper it and then recheck the voltage at battery with engine running. Use a heavy jumper like wires connected to ammeter, not a wimpy small alligator clip jumper.

If voltage does not go up, and you have a common 3 wire Delco alternator check for battery voltage at #2 pin on edge connector and startup voltage on #1 pin.

Could also have a connection or wiring problem

my h was converted over a few years ago to a one wire alternator ground wire on the alternator going to ground, positive wire on the alternator going to the amp gage through the amp gage to the postive post on push button starter then to the battery pos post

If the amp gauge shows a discharge when the lights are on, it is probably OK. It is evidence that the alternator is not functional. I like the use aof a Hitachi alternator and a three wire system. It mmics the way they are used in Nissan trucks. Jim

Two things to say;
First, my knowledge of electrical is zero, nothing.
Second, I ordered a diode assembly from Charlie Uthke, Charlie"s Repair, 22195 State Hwy 56, Austin, MN 55912, [email protected], plugged it into the top of my 12 volt Delco alternator, and it fixed everything. It charges imediately, ammeter runs to the right on starting, then tapers off, battery that had been dying is now charged and has been for a couple years now. Fixed evreything, and very economical.
