I have a 46 H with a popping noise. It started doing this last summer and I found a bent pushrod and broken lifter in #3. Replaced and now it did it again this summer after raking hay. Again, same rod was bent and lifter damaged. Why is the same one having trouble???/ The valve and rocker assembly appears fine. What should I be looking for??? Bad Cam??? Some have said I have a bad lobe...Otherwise the tractor has run perfect for last ten years.

Only a Stuck valve, or bound up rocker 9unlikely) can bend a pushrod. make sure the valve is getting oil. If it is binding, it might be possible to put a chunk of cotton rope in the cylinder through the sparkplug hole, and compress it by moving the piston up by hand to hold the valve up, then remove the retainer and spring to assess the situation. If the stem is tight, puttin a drill motor on the exposed end, allong with ATF or other lube, to spin the valve and help with its sticking. Removal of the head to repair might be in the cards. Jim

Actually the head is off...I will take a closer look at the valve itself. I was thinking that if the lobe was bad and damaging the lifter, then the pushrod would drop down and bind, therefore bending it.

A valve job would be a lot easier fix than a cam job.....
