Farmall super c distributor point gap

I recently inherited my grandfathers super c. After Hooking a sickle mower to it it lost power and only could be driven in first gear and idle engine speed. After checking fuel, replacing spark plugs and fuel filter I opened the distributer and found the point gap to be at .060. I closed the gap to .020 and it wouldn't start. I put it back the way I found it and it started and runs decent still has hiccups when under strain of mower and in gear. Any ideas of why it won't run at .020 gap? Or what's out of adjustment? Thanks steven

I"m surprised the points can be set to open that far, and yet close!

If that is in fact true, gapping them that large would advance your spark timing by quite a bit.

So, I would gap the to "spec" and check the igntion timing.

its a wonder it ran period I had a cub and I didn't set them right and all it would do is backfire you may want to adjust the valves also peobaly hasn't been done in many years

I have seen distributor shafts and/or bushing worn so there's excess shaft wobble and that can contribute to differing gap settings and the points rubbing block (what mates up to shaft cam lobes) can be worn down. WOW 0.060 is awful wide and still allow for good closure when off high cam lobes. Id check the gap on more then one high cam lobe and set to 0.020 and then re time n see what happens.

Sounds like you may have bad bushings in the distributor which would make for odd opening of the points

(quoted from post at 13:58:31 08/21/14) a farmall c is .023 to .027

That is the specs for the plug gap.

If the engine has had the timing reset with the point gap at .060 the timing will be way off if the points are again reset to .020. When ever the point setting is changed the timing needs to be checked and reset if necessary.

Set the points to .020 and reset the timing.

Why would a person set the timing and the points to that big of a gap? Just curious. It ran fine up and down the road and around the yard but as soon as I hooked the sickle mower to it and tried it out it started hiccuping like out of fuel and then like I stated I found the points to be way off and only runs with the point gap that large. -steven
