When, or on what models would this mag have been put.

Does it take an internal, OR top mounted coil

On teh one pictured that is only a cover to keep dirt and moisture out of the magneto and away from the coil.

The E4A had the coil internal to the armature. The F4, H4, and J4 had the coil separate, housed under the mag cover. The F4 mag housing is under the magnet. The H4 and J4, as indicated, is under the black, Bakelite cover.

Does the black cover attach to the coil, or is it just a cover. On E Bay, I saw internal and the black covers, so I don't know if the black covers COVER the coil, or is a part of the coil.

Probably over 1 1/2 million. Number 245012 was built in August, 1941.

1939-1948 or so on A,B,H and Ms all used the same mags also W series and power units. Even Continetal used them on I-H Combines and balers so probably over a million were in use during 40s and into 50s

Internal, under the black cover. Take out the 4 screws that hold the cover on, take out the 2 screws out of the coil rod, coil and all comes out.

H4 mag, will fit quite a few tractors. Maybe someone has the model it came from based on the serial number.

That is a serial number, not a model number. any chance you can find the model? post a picture?

There are no other numbers on it. Theres a oval iron plate on the R side, but its rusted over and I cant see anything on it.

IF you can post pics of them I can sure ID it. It has the black square bakelite? cap on top

Sounds like it's a common H-4 mag that was used in MANY applications.

IS that top black piece the coil? Im told the coil is bad on mine. The top piece, IF it is the coil, is 1/2 the cost of an internal coil, so Im trying to find out which one I need

The mag's coil is cleverly hidden under that top bakelite cap.
