Farmall 340 Row Crop narrow front steering issues

I have a narrow from 340 with power steering and the steering does not work. From all that I have read I believe it to be the worm gear. The wheels will move when the front end is lifted with the loader. Can anyone provide me direction on how to drop the front two wheels? Do I need to take off the Steering bolster or just he 4 bolts holding the fron tires on?

Any other hints/tricks or pics would be greatly appreciated. I should mention this is the first tractor I have owned and am learning the ins and outs as I go, I've tried to find a service manual online however being a newbie I'm not sure which manual I need.

Thanks everyone.

Probably a key that is broke on the gear . Yes remove the four bolts holding the pedestal on the sectar then remove those bolts at the bottom of the sectar so the assy can come down.

Piece of free advice, since this is your first. do not be tempted to hold the tractor up in the air with the loader, as you work on it. Get it up, then crib it up with 6x6 wood blocks, under the frame, so it is held up safely. No concrete blocks either, they're fragile.

First off, confirm again you are talking about a 340 Farmall, not a Utility. The steering is totally different. If you have nothing better for a reference, go to the CaseIH online Parts Store and look at the exploded parts diagram.

Do "find parts by model", search for "340", click on Farmall Tractor, click on "steering mechanism", click on 340 Farmall.

I've never worked on the steering on a 340, but I believe it is essentially like a 240. If so, the advice you have already gotten is all good, with one possible exception. I don't think there are any keys inside that mechanism. I think the worm gear is integral with the input shaft and the sector gear is splined to the output. There is a key where the universal joint goes onto the worm shaft. So check that before you take anything else apart. Otherwise, you still need to pull it apart as Gene described. If you have to replace gears, be aware that the tractors originally with a wide front had a different ratio than those with a narrow front. Replacement gears will have to match up properly so you may have to get both gears from a donor unit.

You will probably want to put in a new bottom seal when you reassemble.

Before tearing anything apart check all the points that may have a key. I agree that it should be a broken key. Especially at the power steering unit. Simple fix if this is the case.

Thank you everyone for your input. I will double check for any broken/loose keys before dropping the assembly and I will deffinitely use some sort of support under the tractor besides the loader. Hopefully I can try to attempt some sort of repairs this weekend.

Finally got around to looking at the steering and the worm shaft needs to be replaced, the worm gear looks ok. I'm sure it is going to be difficult finding this part, any guidence would be appreciated. I just posted a want add in the classified section.

thanks

Out of curiosity, what makes you think the worm shaft needs to be replaced?

You'll have to find a salvage yard with one of these tractors to cannibalize the parts you need, most likely. Not sure if a 240 or even a Super C might be the same. You can look them up on the CaseIH online parts books, and compare part numbers.
