Won't Start

My sister and I inherited my uncles farm, we moved from the city out to the old plantation, we found there is a lot we do not know and appreciate your help. Old Farmall tractor with the steering gear above the front wheels, shaft runs over the top. Siting in the barn for over 30 years, uncle never got around to using it. Figured we needed to change oil, called several people, they said drain old oil and fill with new. Did as instructed, cannot get it started. Funny thing, never knew a tractor would take 52 quarts of oil. Filled it until we could see the oil topped to the cap.

" Filled it until we could see the oil topped to the cap. "

Around here, that"s called an "Al Miller Maneuver".

Likely, there are two petcocks on the side of the oil pan. You should have opened the top one and added oil "til it slowly dripped out, then closed it and installed the 710 cap.

After 30 years, likely it has rotten gas and probably corroded breaker points.

Post a photo, so guys can positively ID it and I"m sure you"ll get lots of help!

Does the tractor look like this? This is the F-20. Hal

No tractor takes 52qts of oil you put it in the wrong place get someone who KNOWS the tractor brand and what it is not just a "FRIEND"

Well, if this is indeed true, I guess I can't kick you around IF you have never changed oil in anything before. But would one not notice that four or five quarts came out? If you did drain 52 qts. out that may be a sign of why it won't run. If you did put 52 qts. of oil in it, that is one reason why it won't run. Any F Farmall I have owned would have had oil falling out of the governor before it got that full. Seems like it should be pouring out of thee vent pipe too. Just sayin.

If you look at my '20' you will see 3 petcocks on the oil pan side.Let oil drain down to the top one. That is the full level. The bottom on is the 'low' level. When oil no longer comes out if the bottom, add approxamately 1 qt till oil comes out the top again.Look on Google images.Type in'Farmall F series' there will be lots of pics to help you identify. There were 5 F series modle tractors built: 'Regular'(24-32); F12(32-38) ; F14(38-39); F20(33-39); F30(31-39)

Sounds fishy to me, but Ill take your word for it. As mentioned, 30 years is along time, and things are bound to be wrong. First, a picture will help a lot. Then we can go from there to help you.

Hi, Fred.

Inherited a farm? That's TOO cool! you two must have been a great niece and nephew.

Unless you're in a huge hurry to get the tractor running, I'd recommend you buy an operator's manual right away. That will tell you how it's supposed to operate, what all the gizmos are, and where the gas, oil, and grease go. And considering the price of motor oil, it would have paid for itself already.

Check the archives on this site for places to buy manuals if you decide to get one.

Just out of curiosity: who would put 52 quarts of oil in anything after draining maybe 6 quarts? Just sayin'.

By the way, we are here to help no matter how hard we are laughing.

Does the tractor turn over when you try to start it?

I can;t take this seriously, but if you folks ARE serious, you need to stop right there, before you hurt somebody.
Anybody put 52 quarts of oil in an engine, [sorry to say this], but you literally, seriously, don't know the first thing.

Hire a good mechanic that has worked on farm tractors. If there are farmers nearby ask them
if they know any mechanics they would recommend.
It will be money well spent. Hal
