Farmall C Instant Load When Power Switch Turned On

I"ve been having an issue recently where the ammeter needle pops over to about -8 (on a guage that ranges from -20 to 20) when you pull on the power switch. This is with the engine and lights off. What could be causing this drain? Or is this normal? Thank you!
 
From my experience that is perfectly normal and I believe it indicates the current to the coil. I'll let one of the electrical experts on this forum advise if the needle indicates the points are closed or open when there is no deflection of the ampere needle. I have seen times when the needle doesn't move when the power switch is pulled to the on position which can also indicate a discharged or defective battery but it is generally the points are either in the closed or open position, Hal.

YES, if the points are closed when the switch is turned on, the amp gauge WILL show a discharge. If the points are open, the amp gauge will stay at zero.
 
Thanks Rusty as I knew it was one way or the other but thought is was when the circuit is closed with both surfaces of the points making contact, Hal.
 
If its a battery powered coil distributor ignition and you turn on the switch and points are closed (as normally would be) but no other lights or loads are on, I WOULD EXPECT A CURRENT DRAW OF AROUND 4 AMPS. If a coil is drawing 8 amps the points will burn up prematurely. You dont have a 6 volt coil unballasted on a 12 volt system do you???

The points are most likely CLOSED because they only open at TDC on a certain cylinders compression power stroke and when an engine is shut down it dont like to stop right at a TDC on compression location, it will roll ahead over or kick back instead, THEREFORE points are usually closed on a setting engine. Id except only 4 amps instead of 8 on a coil ignition however, 8 sounds too high to me.

If the lights work, they should draw about 8 to 9 amps. If they draw more like 15, the gauge may be getting thin oin the internal shunt, causing greater than normal draw. I would use a Digital Meter with a 20 Amp capacity to measure the real draw. Jim
