U2 power unit

I have found a IH power unit serial number C123 2843 which probably came off a baler (has flat belt pulley). I've found info that the owners manual is for Farmall A, B, BN, C and U2. Can the year be determined from the serial number? Is there any kind of clutch in the right angle drive? Thanks in advance.

Usually the right angled ones dont have a clutch. If it came from a combine it will have a clutch. Does it have a starter as most did. I have two one with clutch and other right angle does not.

Gene, thanks for the reply. Yes it has a starter and generator. The right angle drive assembly has a hole in the top which looks like it should have a shaft in it. Being it is open where dirt could get in I think something is missing. Not sure if it is from a combine or baler. The young man where I got it says its been in the barn as long as he can remember which would be 20-25 years.

My friend has a 2cyl power unit with a grille on both ends of the hood. The engine appears to be the same as the LUC Deere. It has a straight drive & a fiber laminated pulley & a hand clutch. Did anyone ever use the same engine on their power unit.

You can get the year from the casting date code on the engine block. Should be "XX-YY-?" where XX is month, YY is day, and ? is the year code:

Z = 1954
Y = 1953
X = 1952
W = 1951
T, U, V = 1950
S = 1949
R = 1948
Q = 1947

That should cover C123's.
