junk in fuel line

When we finished baling a couple of weeks ago my M started acting like it has water in the tank for about a minute, then it ran fine the rest of the day. Decided today I would empty the sediment bowl and carb bowl and make sure there was no water. After reinstalling the sediment bowl I thought I would run a little gas out the carb before installing the plug and it looked a little slow to me. I then pulled out the screen going into the carb and it was full of what looked like grass roots in it. I'm surprised the tractor ran at all. This is the 3rd tractor in 2 years where I have had junk in that screen. The other two had some kind of jelly looking stuff in it. All my tractors have screens in the sediment bowl. I have seen stuff looking like strands in the sediment bowl before. Anybody else see this kind of stuff. My tractors don't do much from end of fall to early spring so maybe stuff is growing while sitting around.
 
I have heard of people cleaning and sealing the tank and adding a taller stand pipe into the fuel tank so you are not sucking off the bottom if interested I can get you info on the stand pipe as for sealing our local radiator shop cleans and seals them up
 
I stuffed a little piece of rolled-up wire window screen into the inlet of the sediment bowl, so it acts like a pre-strainer up inside the tank. Never a problem since.
 
the jelly stuff could be silicone rtv sealant. there is also a bacteria that can grow in the gasoline, similar to the stuff you get in diesel. for a neat fuel screen steiners sells one that fits in the top of the sediment bowl inside the tank. part number abc 1315. its a brass screen with a brass base. works real good.
