Judging by casting numbers, and appearance, my 300 has a pto assembly from a 460. I thought it didn't look quite right so I did some digging. Why in the world would someone do that? Is it a better unit? It works ok but wont stay latched in because the linkage is worn bad. Id just rather find the correct assembly and swap it out. Thoughts on this ?I will post pics soon.

In my humble opinion, the 460 (clutch type) is a better unit than the old planetary type.Probably why it was changed.Leave it be.The latch parts can be easily repaired by any decent welder.Just build up and grind back to shape.

Delta I think I will just leave it then. It does work good we baled with it a few weeks ago with no problems. I keep the disconnect on belly turned off when im not using it though, as it will keep turning even when lever is forward. Thanks for the input.

If you use anything that needs a critical PTO RPM you may need to be careful. That PTO will give you a higher PTO RPM compared to a planetary type when installed in a F-300.

Okay thanks Pete. . .when I baled with it I was a little over half open on the throttle. The old Case baler will fly apart if you get too carried away. It needs to go the trip soon its really getting worn out. Thanks for the info.

Getting rusty on my formulas anymore, but if I figured correct its about 781 PTO RPM at 1750 engine RPM. Outside chance they could have changed the drive gears in the center housing to match a clutch type PTO. But if the cover under the big drive gear is a 300 number I would say not. Not sure if the lower 460 clutch type drive gear will clear in a 300 housing without grinding. If you don"t need full power on the PTO you could get by at lower RPM without over speeding a implement that may cause damage or be a safety concern.

I didn't take the time to look up if I remembered the correct math to figure it. You can check, engine crankshaft speed is turning a 25 tooth gear on a shaft and the 25 is driving a 56 tooth gear turning shafts to the PTO input. Output speed of the clutch type PTO is the same as the input unless slippage. Planet PTO has some gear reduction inside it.
