international574 not charging

My international 574 with d239 is not charging. I
checked the wires they look good. Got the volt
meter out and testested it with the engine off. 12
volts on one of the posts on top and on the charging
lug. Turn ignition on and I now have 12 volts on
the second post on top. Started engine revved to
1500 rpm. turned lights on and main lug on
alternator is at 11.5 volts. Bought a reman
alternator and same result. Am I missing something.
I will get the alternator tested next week. Just
can"t do it on the weekend.
Thanks for any and all help

I would say 3 wires two on top and the main lug on back. I think its a 10 si delco rami. Internal regulator

I think you will find a problem with the new alternator. You had 12 volts on the battery stud and #2 terminal with key off. When you turned the key on you posted that you also had the same voltage on #1 terminal. That voltage should have been less since it has to run through a resistor before entering the regulator. From the #1 terminal it goes through the regulator and then through the brushes and coil in the rotor. The resistance in the rotor should be near the same as the resistor resulting in a voltage reading of about 4 -8 volts on the #1 terminal with the key switch on. The fact that the voltage is the same indicated that there is a problem with an open circuit internally in the alternator.

I have seen this problem a couple of times with rebuilt units. One time the grounding clip was missing on the regulator. Another time the protective sleeve was still on the slip rings keeping the brushes from making contact.

Hi Jim,

Verify the wiring as per Bob Melville's diagram.
Just ignore the wiring to resistor going the coil as this is for gas engine. Originally your 574 would have had a generator and voltage regulator unless it was a very late model. Does it have an amp guage or is it idiot light only?

Early 574s use a 10DN alternator with external regulator. They use three wires on the alternator. A hot lead from the ammeter gauge, a ground wire, and a wire from the regulator on the F terminal.

Later ones use a 10SI alternator with the internal regulator. the gasoline models use a diode between the key switch and the #1 terminal. Diesel models use a resistor instead of the diode. The #2 terminal has a wire from the battery cable post on the starter. Thee wire connected to the output stud on the alternator comes from the ammeter gauge.

They all use a gauge rather than a light for charge indicator.

(quoted from post at 22:15:31 08/09/14) Hi Owen, a major difference in the early 574s
delivered here in Canada still had Lucas generator
with external regulator.
