Loader for a farmall A

Hi all,

I recently purchased a '44 Farmall A for some light mowing and occasionally hauling a wagon. I was just wondering is it possible to mount a loader on the front of this and if so where might i be able to find the parts? Any help or advice would be appreciated thanks.

It is no doubt possible but it is not a great idea. The engine block
acts as the frame on these tractors and is a possible weak point,
and the offset design would seem to me it would be unstable.

International made a loader for these tractors. Google the Model 1000 offset loader and you will find lots of info. They work well as long as they are used as they were intended.

They didnt make a loader for a 44A because it doesent have a hy system. But you could find a loader for a SA then run a hy pump off the belt pulley. The Char-Lynn Power Pac unit would work just fine as it has the pump, res and single and 2 way controls all in one unit. 10 GPM AND 1000LBS pressure would do anything you could need for hy.It can be ran off the pto as 750rpm is the recomended speed for the unit. I just mounted one on a B and used the I-H loader built for the C,SCs works fine.

Just like any tractor operator needs some common sense why do they upset the new big 100pluss jobs dirve down the road with a big round bale way up in the air on the front and end up in a ditch dead happens all too many times. How about local guy with his small kids on a four wheeler upset and killed one or letting a 6yr drive one and upsetting and getting killed happens all too much of the tme.

On that size tractor a three point hitch might be more useful than a small loader. I don't know if they are available for an A or not.

How will a three pt system work without a hy system. I will take my loader on my B with hy system over three pt any day hard to beat front blade for moving snow. Then with loader can picup tons of stuff sure beats lifting by hand.

Gene here a load that dad and I built back in the mid 60's on a 1947 Farmall B.It has a fully hydraulic loader and it came from factory with a C block for live hydraulic.

I have an IH 1000 loader on my SUPER A, and it is not unstable at all. Handy as a roll of duct tape.

One big drawback is the total, utter, and complete lack of power steering.

Providing hydraulics on a plain A is one major hurdle to overcome. Those Charlynn power packs don't grow on trees, but neither do the loaders.

Keep in mind that anything driven off the PTO or belt pulley will stop as soon as you push the clutch. You could cobble up an old power steering pump belt-driven off the crankshaft to provide live hydraulics.

I personally would look for a complete setup that came off an A. You don't see them often but you do see them from time to time. Just keep your eyes open and be willing to travel a couple hours in any direction to pick it up.

I had an IH 1000 loader on my 140 and it lifted well. There was no power steering and it really was a pain to try and turn the front wheels with a load.

You got lucky as in the final days of production they did use the blocks that had a place for th hy pump great set-up they are sure handy. Ive had mine for 40yrs or so. Now some day i need to put a two way cycl on the forks then it would realy be a neat deal.

I ran 1/2 x 4 from the steering sector to the bell housing no dange of busting it in two you could do the same on an A.
