Remove M&W hand clutch

Since I cannot find parts I was thinking of removing it. Anyone know how hard this is? I tried tightening the hell out of it but the nut just spins itself loose again and the tractor goes nowhere.

You're missing the star shaped keeper. It has tabs
that bend over into notches on the nut.Without
that, the nut will just spin away....The plates
rarely get worn thin, rather the notches/'splines'
get worn to knife edges.I may have a (new) keeper.

There is a possibility to get new circular linings on your disks. Using locktite on the threads can hold he nut. Were it mine I would repair and use. Jim

You can remove them. You will need the complete brake
assembly plus pinion shaft and a few
'incedentals'.Do not junk/throw away!!!Some here
will want them.To either install on his tractor,or
use as parts .....

What part do ya need???? I have nuts, lock washers, can get discs, etc.

I am betting that the outer bearing is shot, if it locks up the nut will spin off.

If you do remove it I buy parts for these.

Is it an H or M????

What parts are you looking for?

I got the clutch disks for the hand clutch on my MH relined at local truck driveline shop.

Totally different animal on the inside.

I do not have a lock for the nut. There are 2 nuts
one to lock the other but it is broke I tried to
weld it but no good. I do know the bearing has
flat spots and the bearing race has a split in it.
I have not gone any further, I didn"t thi nk I
could get parts. But if I can I will tear oit on
down and maybe get some pics? If that will help me
diagnose it. This tractor was my father in laws I
bought it after he died in a tractor rollover on a
different tractor. It has a 3 point hitch I added
heavy duty one, wide front end and a high low
transaxle and this hand clutch. It runs great and
looks good...If it would only move. I probably
wore it out digging out my pond and landscaping
with the Box blade:(

Here are 2 numbers to call, they should be able to help you out.

If it's an H or an M, it's a pretty involved job. You have to pull the platform and remove the left bull gear in order to remove the M&W unit and install an original bull pinion carrier.

It will NOT pull out the side.

You DO NOT use the hand clutch for that kind of work.

Also if there is room for 2 nuts on the shaft you have internal issues beyond the bearing.

I have some M&W hand clutch parts, that is my former cell # number. I got a different phone and number several years ago. Send me an email and I will give you my current number. [email protected] I am hesitant to post my phone number on a public forum as I always get phone calls from scam artists and telemarketers afterwards....

I bet you are right and have worn it out, as Kevin said, the hand clutch is not meant to be used for that kind of heavy work. The M&W hand clutch is designed for operations like baling hay or running a cornpicker where you may need to stop forward motion of the tractor without interrupting power to the PTO and thus allow the baler or cornpicker to catch up. The owner's manual specifically states that is not to be used for heavy tillage work.

Yeah it started slipping during that and then got
worse and worse. Wasn't baling hay at that time but
now have 2 horses, came with 2nd wife, and it sure
would be handy.

I never used the clutch while using the box blade.
But it would eventually get to the point where it
would just slip with less and less load and I would
have to tighten the nut on it.

(quoted from post at 18:09:46 08/06/14) The nuts are only 1/4" thick special thread and not
a nut you can put a wrench on.

So who are you replying too???

Some of us know about the parts in there and yes that nut will take a special socket but it is not needed.

Absolutely no reason to use a hammer and chisel on it either!

It is looking like you do not really want help with this this as several have given you good advise that you seem to be ignoring.

Did you not grasp my post about the outer bearing?????

You even wrote that it was shot!

Someone mentioned if I have 2 nuts on it something is wrong. That is the way it came and worked fine.
Outer bearing has flat spots but not that bad it does spin freely and is always packed good. bearing shop said one would cost $100 and they were not able to find the race by matching the #. I hate to spend a couple hundred dollars to find the internals are bad that is why I ask if I tear it down and take some pics would that help.

You have to tear it down to make an assessment!

Also you should buy a manual for the M&W so you know what you are getting into.

I am telling you again that if the outer bearing is bad it will not stay together! Flat spots probably means the races have spun and damaged the cam unit anyway.

Has the inner bearing been greased? Inner bearing IS NOT available other than used.

Tear it apart and if you are not willing to invest several hundred then remove it!

I have been able to find a new inner bearing. I just took the old one in to the auto parts store and they ordered a new one for me.

How long ago??? My neighbor needed one and the local bearing places found the right style but not size.

So we found a good used one for his.

I have the installation manual, parts list and parts diagram if I can figure out how to post it here.
