farmall H transmission gear oil

Just asking would it b alright to use 85- 140 gear oil in my farmall H other tham 85-90 heard pros and cons on this issue. THANKS

I use 85w140 in all my old tractors. In my opinion unless the tractor has been rebuilt in the recent past it's got quite a bit of wear in the transmission another gears. I tried to use the correct oil in my A and found the gears difficult to get in and the transmission was loud. 85w140 made it to function much more smoothly and it's been running fine for years on end.

I guess it depends on how & when you use the tractor. If the tractor will be run in cold winter temps, I would NOT use 85W-140, I'd use 90W.

Those old transmissions & rear ends have a pretty simple splash lubrication system, channels & passageways to collect and feed oil to the bearings. And believe me, at 32 degrees F. 85W-140 is NOT splashing around, meaning bearings are running dry.
