ih 584 problems going up incline

While brush hogging with 1984 IH584 tractor seemed to lose power when going up an incline. After 15 to 20 feet, it would regain power and take off. It never lost RPMs on engine or didn't seem to bog down. Mower continued to mow fine. Can this be a hydraulic filter problem or clogged screen? Could it be a transmission or clutch problem? The Hytrans fluid was low, we topped it off and the problem continued. Plan to drain Hydraulic fluid and change filter but don't want to do this if anyone thinks it is something else.

Hi David, sounds like classic junk in the fuel tank that is common on the 74/84 series tractors BUT you said that engine does not loose RPM.

Next question does it have T/A (Hi/Lo lever on dash opposite throttle lever)? If so does it do it in T/A LO or only in T/A Hi?
To test clutch drive tractor in 3rd Hi and apply brakes hard, it should drag the engine RPM down. If the engine is not dragged down and ground speed stalls then clutch or HI T/A is slipping. Try again with tractor in LO T/A, if engine is not dragged down and ground speed is stalled then clutch is slipping.

I am guessing your clucth is wore out. Pto and drives off presure plate and clutch wouldnt affect it. Check if you have free play on the cluth pedal. Clutch pedal should have about 1 1/2 inch free play. You may be lucky and clutch adjustment will fix it. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. The tractor does have HI/LO ranges, but not on the dash. Ive tested by applying the brakes and it does not do it, it seems to only do it on inclines.

Hi David, if there is no T/A then the 584 is direct drive from the clutch to transmission. To me it still sounds like a fuel supply problem to the injection pump. Either clogged fuel filter or junk in the fuel tank blocking the outlet. A few years ago, my brother's 684 was acting the same way and it was the remains of a lady bug in the fuel tank clogging the outlet now and again.

i hope that is all it is but the motor never lost any rpms while i was mowing and the sound of the motor stayed the same it felt like the wheels were spinning but they were not

He said it never lost any rpms, so it wouldnt be a fuel problem. The high and low is all gear drive on them if menory serves me rite. Check out the clutch, I bet problem is there.

i will check the clutch.i was hopeing that was not the problem because we have 80 acres of crp to mow in august but that is farming.i will look this weekend. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP EVERYONE

Here's a remote possibility: Is the clutch pedal freeplay adjusted properly? If there is zero freeplay in the pedal the clutch may not be fully engaged.

This is a bad situation as it will ruin your clutch and throwout bearing very quickly. Really, some damage has already been done, and the writing is on the wall. How much and how soon... Impossible to tell. All you can do is adjust it back to proper freeplay and use it until it gives out completely.
