Guys, a buddy called me and asked me to appraise his 856, but it is too new to fall in my area of expertise; it is in very nice condition, has approx. 200 hrs on an out of frame rebuild which was done at a CaseIH dealer, it is dsl. has good rubber, all the systems work well, and has only been used the past 12-15 years to pull a disc at the dirt track he owns/promotes. He is planning on retiring from the track and is going to be selling his equipment this fall, just wanted an idea of where he should be as an actual selling price as he doesn"t want to do like so many and price it thousands high and sit on it for ever, but also wants to get his value from it, it is located on the border of NY/Pa near Binghamton, NY as I know location does count when pricing, the paint is good but a tad faded, the tin is all very nice....I already valued the 2 owner IH 100 for him, then immediately crossed his palms with a check for that amount, and it"s in my garage along with the snowplow, chains, plow and stone rake LOL. Thanks

Doe it have a cab or flat top fenders? Does it have a working TA? Does is have 38" rubber? Does it have dual hyd and PTO" Does it have a 3 pt hitch? Is the front end in good condition? Does it have front weights or any wheel weights? If it has flat tops, dual pto and hyd, with 38" rubber and 3pt hitch along with a good solid front end it would fetch $8000 to $10000 easily in the Midwest. If it has a crappy cab, with single hyd or pto and the torque is out it might only be worth about $4000 or $5000. A lot of variables to look at when pricing these old girls. They were one of the best tractors IH ever made though so if it is in good shape and nicely equipped it should bring good money.

TY! It has a good TA, 38" rubber flat top fenders, 3pt, a good tight wide front end, 2 sets of remotes, don"t know about dual PTO I believe just 540

Okay, provided the technician at the dealer knew what he was doing it sounds like a great tractor. The reason I mention this is that the D407 is no engine for a mechanic that is a little green to tackle. Owen, Pete, or The Tractor Vet can chime in and give you more information as to why this engine is a little tricky to work on. One would have to assume though that they knew what they were doing and it is good to go. If that is the case and it were mine here in the Midwest I would not let it go for any less than $8000. Depending on some of the other little things I might ask $10,000 or more. Sounds like a good one.

TYVM...very helpful as like I said my interests and knowledge base tend to stay in the pre 60"s! Pete

Hi Pete. I don"t have any info for you , but I am interested in the race track you speak of. I"m a dirt track racing fan. The two tracks that come to mind in the area you mentioned are Five Mile Point in NY and Penn Can in PA. I get to those tracks maybe once or twice a year, usually in the Fall. Is either one of those tracks the one you are dealing with? Great racing at both.
