Is a 1066 too much tractor?

I know now that I am going to need a 100+ hp to run a forage harvester with but is a 1066 too much tractor for the New Holland Super 717? IH made a good number of them and I've seen a few for sale in the local area. I've also been thinking heavily into getting a 1066 Hydro for chopping also but not sure if it would be any better seeing as how the Hydro model only has about 85 drawbar HP. Which tractor would I be better off with?

Although the hydro model gives up quite a bit of drawbar power compared to the gear drive model the PTO power is identical and this is what the cutter uses. The drawbar power required to pull a cutter and wagon is very minimal by comparison. I would think that a hydro would make about the perfect forage harvester tractor.

Either hydro would do well.Naturally,a 1066H would have more power that the H100.The 100 would be a fine tractor. As was said, the hp requirement is PTO,not drawbar. As far as "underpowered",you would be surprised as to how much that Hydro will pull.BTW,I've owned 3 hydros(826H;H100;1026).Love em!Still own(and use frequently) the 826.

Go with the 1066 gear drive. Wont be too much power for chopper, just pick a gear thet chopper can handle and you will be happy. Hydros are kinda nice for some work, but if hydro ever goes bad, grab your billfold it will be very expensive! Lot worse than putting a TA in!
