bought cub. motor would turn over. cleaned points, etc. put gas in tank and water in radiator. engine will only turn part way.

pulled head off today. 2 and 3 will come to the top, but will not go all the way down. hence, 1 and 4 will not come to top. cylinder walls are not bad rusty. ??? twisted 5 head bolts off, removing head.

what has happened to the motor, so that it will not turn? seems to have something to do with adding water.

If it sat a long time the rings maybe sticking to the pistons so you can not turn it all the way over due to cylinder tapper and the rings not moving. I would fill the cylinder with ATF and give it a few day to do its job

when i first got this tractor, the engine would turn all the way over, as if have said. after adding water to radiator, gas to tank and cleaning points, etc. engine would not turn over all the way. i think that it has to do with adding water. not sure.

Can not see how that could be unless it filled the oil pan up with a oil and water mix but then it should come out of the dip stick

Not trying to bring you bad news or anything but you may have a broken crankshaft. I"m saying this because I took apart a 154 just this week that owner complained of knock in motor. So we pulled pan and went to checking bearings. While trying to roll over to go to next set it locked up and wouldn"t roll either way. Finally got it to roll back and crank broke between front main and number one rod.

Could one cylinder have gotten filled with water? Cracked head? Head gasket?
Pull all the spark plugs and see if it turns over completely then.

pulled head. no apparent leak in head or block. cylinder walls may be a bit rough. i plan to hone cylinder wall a bit and if that fails, pull pan.

ADDING WATER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS. SEVERAL THINGS COULD BE. CRANKSHAFT BROKEN,SPIN OUT ROD OR MAIN BEARINGS,CAMSHAFT BENT, ROD BROKEN ON ONE OF THE OTHER CYLINDER,MAGNETO LOCKING UP,STARTER LOCKUP,. I WOULD PULL STARTER, SEE IF WILL TURN OVER BY HAND. NEX PULL THE PAN, YOU WILL FIND IT THERE IF LOWER HALF BROKEN. ALSO COULD BE PISTON SKIRT BROKEN OR SOMEONE BEEN IN LOWER HALF, AND PUT ROD CAPS BACKWARDS.

Drop the pan cause if the head is off water cannot be the problem and a sticky valve is also not your problem but by dropping the pan then you will be able to see why it wont turn over.

wont know for sure untill the pan is off, but a valve could still be a problem on a flathead, think about it, if the valve is stuck down or partialy down then the cam lobe hits it, it will prevent the engine from turning any farther
