Oil and Filter

Hey guys just wondering what type of oil to put in my 1955 Gas Farmall 400 and what type of filter to use as well. Like always any help is much appreciated.

A multi-weight 15w-40, such as Shell Rotella seems to be the oil of choice for most of these older tractors. If you have a Case-IH dealer locally, that is where you should get the filter, and be sure to get the rubber O-ring as well, and USE it.

Without looking it up, I will guess that it will take 8 quarts.

An owners manual is your best friend. All of that info is in there.

About 9 qts. of the same motor oli you use in your pickup.NAPA # 1125.As waas said,an owners manual is your best friend.Also the cheapest thing you will ever buy for your tractor.Order here from YT.They will alao have the filter.

I use 15w40 s/c rated oils in about 99% of my farm equipment.

And that includes a 44H and a ?year? C

You can get a filter from napa or CaseIH dealer and make sure to get the o-ring. As far as oil, they called for 30wt I believe but many of people use 15w-40 rotella, im told it helps if your engine is old and your oil pressure is lower than normal. I rebuilt my motor so I use 10w-30 in mine. I think it's more important that you keep the oil filled and changed regularly. ~Anthony

I second the oil changed and filled is the most important part of caring for these old engines, A mix of 30W, 10W30, and 15W40 from cans that happen to be sitting on the shelf would still be better that what was offered in the 1950s.

I have to order my filters from the IH dealer because NAPA and KOI near my farm do not supply the o ring with the filter. I live in Northern KY near Cincy. Ellis

Ellis, when the gaskets do not come with a NAPA filter they are usually still available from the store. For example, the gasket for the 1172 and 1125 NAPA filters is NAPA pn. 5070. For some reason known only to NAPA and WIX (and other brands of filters mfd. by WIX ) the short (1172) filters come with a gasket and the tall (1125) filters don't.
