not sure but could be from the IPTO unit, clean it up and put in the shed and watch. i had my pto rebuilt on my 986 this past spring. there is a gasket that goes around it and it has bolts around the outside may check them. good luck.

47farmallM,Depending on where you are in the seal going out it may leak while shut down, and leak very little to none when running!
"Lower Rock Shaft Seal" Big Project to do! Send tractor to a good general tractor mechanic, will cost about $1000 to have done maybe some less,,, when I had my 966 done last yr I had both Lower Rock Shaft Seals done and adjust my Clutch and TA, Tweak my Injector pump while there at their shop.
Basically drain and catch all rear-end Oil,
Remove whole PTO unit.
remove keepers so shaft can be removed and seals replaced!!
Most all work is done through the PTO hole in the rear end!
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

A 986 has a cat 2 hitch and that left side can be pulled off and O-rings replaced without even draining the rear. Polish up any grooved or rusted parts . Parts book is confusing and shows two O-rings on right side but they are on the left side where that one is leaking. Have repaired many but they were usually on much newer tractors so wear may be a factor on this one. You need to get correct O-rings not some will fit jobbers. If it was a cat 3 you would have to pull whole shaft out to service and you also have to to do right side of this hitch.

hey pete I been looking on case parts but I have yet to find that diagram for that part. have any idea what they call that part

The torsion shaft seals. Been there several times with my past IH tractors. Done exactly like Pete 23 said to do. Once they start to leak, it only gets worse.

Looks like the retainer strap for the fuel tank needs to be loosened up a bit. When they are strapped down too tight the tank will collapse like in your picture.

Torsion shaft seals. Not a big deal I would replace the brass bushings while you have it apart. It wont cost you a 1000.00 bucks

sweet thanks guys.. I knew if I came to ya that ya would know what to do.. I guess ill just do both sides at one time.. owen that's not my exact tractor just one I found on google images but its funny cause my tank looks just like it..

just another project to get done after I heal up from my hand surgery..

ok too this apart today and rpcled the outter oring on the tractor. but I couldn't find the part number for the oring in the crank arm online.

Pete gave the answer:

"Look in hydraulics, 10-38. O-rings are number 10 & 4. Under draft control parts."

Do a search for 986. Select hydraulics. Look down through the hydraulic listing and select (10-38).

For both sides it takes one of item 10 and two of item 4.

ok I installed the one number 4 on the outside. if I pull that retainer out for the other one will all my hytran come out also?

Hello. I ran across your post while researching an oil leak on our tractor. I don't know if you will get this question or not, as this posting is several years old. We have a 986 that is having the same leak as yours did. Were you able to replace both left side o-rings without draining the oil? I'd rather not drain the oil if it is not necessary to replace the o-rings, but will if needed. BTW, we are just up the road in Denton, so hello fellow North Texan!
