How To Set MD Timing

Hello,

I purchased a MD Farmall at a auction. When I went to pick it up someone stole the magneto. I purchased another correct magneto how do I properly time this tractor?

First get the number one cylinder at top dead center. Then set your mag so that you know which wire is number one. Then hook all other wires up accordingly and start the engine on gas. These engines don"t have alot of rpm adjust on the gas side except for what you can do with the choke but then try to get a timing light on it. You may need to use a separate 12v battery to power it but just see how your light lines up with the timing marks then adjust as needed. Also I know way back when they used to set the no1 cylinder to the timing mark and with the mag at full retard you can rotate it towards advance very slowly until you heard the impulse coupler snap. That"s works well too its just not as accurate. Used that method on my Deere and it runs like it should. Just always be sure that when dealing with the ignition on one of these diesels that it turns counter clockwise unlike the gassers. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Oh and post a pic too. God bless.
