farmall h transmission whine

I have a 49 farmall H . I have had the transmission out and ring gear and pinion to replace some of the bearing and such when i restored the tractor few years ago. The thing I was wanting to know is the transmission has always had a whine when going forward in a pull but no whine when going down hill or not in a pull. put 80w 90 gear oil in it . Any thoughts to the cure the whine. Hear alot of H's mine sounds the loudest. Thanks Scott

Well there is an art to properly shimming that ring and pinion so they do not whine excessively.

That said most of those older spur gear tranny's do whine some. I thought I would be smart and change my tranny oil in my ole Farmall h. The stuff that was in there looked like cake batter. Drained that out and threw it away. Put 90 weight mineral in there and now it whines louder than it did before. Kinda wish I would have left that cake batter stuff in there.

Anyway when time and funds allow: I am going to put 85W140 in there (GL-1 thru GL-4 grade which can be obtained from NAPA). I do not want any of the current GL-5 grade stuff that is sold in most discount locations. GL-5 has additives that can eat brass bushings. I do not know if my ole H has any brass in the tranny but I do know some of my other tractors do have brass in them. No sense risking me grabbing wrong bottle.

Anyway 85W140 may quite it down a tad. Just do not expect miracles.

I run GL-5 85/140 in all my old tractors - 2 Olivers, a JD model B and my IHC Super C. Walmart has the best price. Their brand, Supertech, states that it is safe for brass, bronze etc.

If you want to clean the differential prior to adding new gear lube, a couple of gallons of universal tractor (hydraulic) oil helps flush out the goo and absorb any water present. Just add the UTF, drive your tractor around for a few minutes, and drain. Some guys recommend diesel, however I have heard it can be hard on the seals.

Just my 2 cents.

David just asking did u get into the transmission or was that the way its always been. I'm think i'm going to try 85- 140 gear oil and a lucus gear additive what do u think. Scott

My 1950 H doesn't whine at all. That said, my 140 whines horribly. I found putting 85w140 gear oil in quiets them up a lot. I had a hard time getting the 140 into gear with 75w90 but with the thicker oil it goes in much better. Gotta remember, these tractors may have been designed to use thinner gear oil but 60 years of use can change that. Tolerances aren't what they once were. But I think my H wasn't used much over the 64 years as the trans is super quiet, the quietest I've ever heard.
