Farmall M looking to pull

Ive got a Farmall M with a super M kit that ive bought and like to pull but keep it cheap seeing how im still in school. I bought a msd ignition and coil for it but not yet installed. What plugs and wires should I run? What should I run timing at? gas octane? Any carb work to be done? Anything helps! thanks.

The Fuel is best with 87 octane pump gas. Unless the compression pressure is near 165, regular is best, as it is higher octane than the regular supplied to the farm when the tractor was new. Timing can be left set so it starts easily and does not back against the starter. A 450 cam and 450 propane head, and a 450 carb. RPM adjusted to 2200 will also be an advantage. Jim

Just a simple tune up and you will be good to go. You don't have a power house, so unless you pull only in stock class, you will be disappointed. Heck there are guys out there who pour tons of money into these old tractors to win the $50, 1st place prize money.

Pulling an M in the stock class is much more fun than juicing it up and running it modified. The cost can get crazy high if you begin modifying the tractor. Like Jim mentioned, replace everything with 450 parts (manifold, head, carb, cam), rebuild motor with step head pistons, remove air intake and replace with a k&n filter straight pipe, get timing correct, valve job, clean gas. You can take your question to the external_link on this sit and the folks over there can help also, but, I'd think hard about the stock vs. modified, I have much more fun with the stock tractor, adjusting weight position, tuning things just right, ect.... Just a better time finding out who has the better tractor that day and busting balls with the boys. For us it's about enjoying the history and hobby of antique tractors, not about how much you can spend on tractor parts. Best of luck and most importantly, have fun! ~Anthony
