I"m restoring a "51 H.....can anyone direct me to info. about what on the tractor is NOT supposed to be red, other than the silver rims ? What about the starter, generator, fan, fan pulleys, carb, exhaust manifold, rear axle ? Most of the pics I"ve seen seem to show the coil and distributer cap as the only thing that is black, but there are many different restoration paint schemes out there. Any help would be appreciated....thanks !

steering wheel, tires rims, gauge faces, axles, seat cushion, light lens. The radiator wasn't painted at all, just got hit with overspray. Plugs and wires, dist. cap. (I know I missed somethings.)Theres some minor details, but everything pretty much is red. Axles were left alone, but many people paint them black or gray, to keep them from rusting. As someone told me once, if its black on a Farmall, its replacement

Donnn"t know what"s "s"posed" to be, but on my 1950 H I painted the carb black, and the new seat spring came black so I left it. Starter is painted black.
I painted the radiator fan shroud gray, I think it looks better gray. The carb-to-governor aluminum tube was left gray.
My opinion, I think it looks better if a few items are gray, a few items are black.
Except axles. They should be red.

Paint it for yourself, not the paint Nazis. 90% of the very pro tractors have detailed , painted generators, starters, manifolds and carbs. A few chrome pieces add a sparkle also.

Painting at the factory was not done for detailing. Tractors came through the paint booth without hoods, front rims, rear wheel, and rear rims. Radiators were painted black during production and no effort was made to repaint them. The serial tags on the starter and generator were masked off along with the other items mentioned. I would guess that the tractor ID plate was installed after painting because the plate and rivets were not painted but there was paint under the plate.

It's your choice as everyone has an idea of what looks best for them and no two restored tractors are ever going to look the same. On my recently restored Farmall 240 I painted the starter and generator black as an almost 60 year old tractor most likely wouldn't still have the originals on the tractor. I also left all the hoses and other rubber type parts black as they would have all been replacements also. Since most everything was painted off the tractor the radiator is also still black. I personally like a little color contrast with the black to just an entire red tractor which is more what they were when they left the factory. Make yourself happy with the way you want it to look and satisfy yourself for the hard work it takes, Hal.
