706 pto seal fix

I posted a couple weeks ago about changing the seal on a 1000rpm pto and was advised I must get the manual and have a helper. I did get a power train maanual and its ok. I took the whole PTO unit out and got the clutch and all out and split. I even pulled the shaft and changed the seal. Put the shaft back through the cover and having a heck of a time putting the snap ring back in. I'm talking about the one that holds the bearing pressed to the shaft into the cover. I attempted many times last night with a ring compresser. What a task. Have to finish it all today and drain all the oil and get this beast back together. The gears and shafts look great. looks like no wear at all.

Start with one end of the snap ring in the groove and then work your way around it prying with a couple of screwdrivers.

Yeah, that's what I was doing. My Dad is an engine machinist and I grew up around race cars, tractors, harleys and dirt bikes and I have a pretty good ssense of mechanics. Been spinning wrenches all my life but this snap ring is dedicated to being a PITA. The man who owns the farm is supposed to be by today so I will have an extra set of hands. its a chore doing it alone.

Maybe the worst part of all this is that the 1000rpm shaft seal can be replaced from the rear without removing anything. :(

. except you're talking about the 540 shaft seal. I got the whole unit back together and the access panel off the tractor and all bback in. the top shaft can be changed from outside and the 1000 is from inside.

The top shaft is the 1000 rpm shaft. I think you will find that the seal you were replacing was the one on the lower 540 rpm shaft.

es i was bass ackwards. I was replacing the 540 shaft seal. ooops. i get twisted around sometimes . Yeah I see the 1000 shaft seal can be done from outside. good to know for future reference. I have the original power train manual I found and wasn't much help but I got the job done pretty quick for first time. I'm waiting the owner of the farm to come by so we can drain thhe oil and put it all back in and move it out of my way so I can get the 400 fixed. then onto ghe deere dozers annd massy harris rewire. of all the tractors, the ol 9N is the only with no problems. haha.
