Farmall 656 (Gas) Engine Knock - Need Advice

Hi, I'm really new to tractors, I've recently taken over the family farm. In short, my Farmall 656 gas tractor has an engine knock. My neighbor is an older farmer who knows quite a bit, and speculates it may be a rod bearing but of course we can't know for sure.

I got some pretty scary quotes from the local tractor repair place, and I'm not having a lot of luck finding someone to come take a look. I understand I may be able to drop the oil pan and take a look without splitting the tractor, but I have no experience doing this.

Is this something I should research looking at myself or is it hopeless? Thanks for any advice!

Inserts need replaced every 5000 hours or so.

If you're mechanically inclined, drop the pan and replace 'em; bout a hundred dollars.

First and easiest place to look is in the oil filter. If you have a rod or main bearing failure you will find shavings of brass looking material in the base when you take filter off. That would indicate major problems. If you find nothing or possibly fine aluminum you may have a scored piston and that, although serious is not as bad. In any case you will need someone with some experience do the repair or at least guide you in doing it.

Thanks for the replies. Is there a good resource for looking at a diagram of the engine? Also, any tutorials for specifically looking at the rod bearing?

The first thing I should do is look for shavings in the oil filter then? I know that would be a serious issue. The knock wasn't going on for long but I know it doesn't take long to do serious damage either.

I'm kind of at a loss as to what I should start doing, money is also an issue. Thanks again for the help.
