my little farmall cub [ '49] gave up on me yesterday while mowing, got fuel, when it shuts down it will imeadatly restart and idle fine, when i engauge the mower and the tractor starts moving it will run from 1 to 5 or so minutes, terraine is level semi smooth, [ clumpy grass] it has been raining, im thinking moisture in the kill switch, even though the tractor had a tarp on it , thinking that, as i just had the hood off to fix the exhaust and took a look in the gas tank while i was at it, all looked well, i had the problem last year once our summer rains started, but... can that be the problem, or am i dealing with a fuel problem, i have good flow, the mixture is set for the fastest idle, enritching it slightly slows the engine down

(reply to post at 05:27:17 07/18/14) [/quo Float sticking closed a bit. when it stalls it refills and then you start mowing and it uses the gas in the bowl and because the float is not opening all the way it cannot keep up. Where are you checking flow

checking flow at the end of the hose going into the carb, ill check it at the bottom of the bowl, forgot about that

If it is partially stuck it will still flow just not enough under load to keep up. I would start with a few gentle taps to the bowl when it was empty, but you probably will have to take it off and clean it. Could be a bit of water in the gas or a partially plugged filter or screen. Will it stay running with no load ???

Mine done something similar and it would run all day long on a light load. When the going got tough it would shut down but start right back up. I checked the vent on the cap and fuel flow all was fine. Someone on another board suggested that I check the coil as it may be going bad. I put an external coil on it and it runs fine. Someday maybe I will buy the one that goes back in the mag so it looks original.

try running it with the air cleaner pipe disconnected from the carb. it may be the oil bath is plugged up. my cub acted weird the the air cleaner got dirty.

yes the tractor will run fine by itself it can be driven but when i engauge the pto and hit some tough going it just runs rough then dies, i cleaned the air cleaner and changed the oil in it since i had the hood off and it was easy, so its not plugged, the thing usually takes on tough areas just fine, even stuff so tall i have to make 2 passes, but not since it started raining, but i cant say for sure the rain has a thing to do with it, i checked the gas cap [ original style] and the vent is open, so its not vacum locking im going to pull the carb tommorrow and check the float setting, it just cant be much, as for the mag i replaced everything including the coil in that about 6 months ago and it has run fine
