H front seal and rear gaskets

For the front seal on an H motor, how are the felt and rubber seals situated? I have a rebuild video that shows the felt put in loose first, and then the rubber seal is driven on. But when I pried the old seals out, it seems like the felt was on the outside, and the felt and rubber seals were inside of a metal housing that was driven into the cover. What is the correct way to install the front seals?

Also, on the engine rear gaskets, there are two rubber plugs that are pushed into the blocks, and the rear plate goes aside the plugs. The plugs stick out a bit, and where they stick out is into the area where the oil pan gasket goes. Do I need to cut the plugs flush with the oil pan mating surface, or should I just close my eyes and install and torque down the oil pan and oil pan gasket?

Thanks

My old 1939 onwer"s manual shows this sequence, shown going from inboard to outboard on the taper front axle;
dust shield #48541-D
felt washer #43828-D
oil seal #48539-D
cone with rollers #10880-K
retainer #48548-D
bearing cup #13822-V
wheel / skid ring
complete bearing 13311-DA
nut
gasket
hub cap

Regarding rubber plugs, they can protrude slightly, but not much. I have had some that have to be trimmed. Go easy on torquing on the rear plate. There are two longer bolts that actually go up into the lower part the the rear main seal retainer. Overtorqueing these will result in stripped threads,as the retainer is made of pot metal.Best insurance against leaks is good clean mating surfaces and evenly spread sealant. I use permatex no. 2A. Be sure oil pan is totally flat with no pits. Pits can be fixed with jb weld. My .o2. Others may have different answers.

I seriously have never seen an H with a felt seal on the front main, just the seal, which you are refering to as a metal housing. Could be the Hs Ive been into never had the felt put back in??

I don't think I've seen a gasket kit that had a front crank seal that used a felt like the original seal did. The felt that comes in the gasket package is for the water pump.

Originally the seal had a felt side and a leather side. The leather side went toward the engine with the felt facing the pulley The lip on the leather seal actually also faced the pulley rather than the oil side as seal normally would be installed. It was designed more to keep dust out of the engine more than to keep the oil in. The oil slinger between the crank pulley and the timing gear keep the oil away from the seal. With the modern replacement seal you will want to install it with the lip facing the oil side or else the tension spring will rust off.

I would have also thought that a modern seal doesn't need any additional seals. But I believe I have two circular felt seals in my rebuild kit. Maybe the smaller of the two is for the water pump. Although where does the WP seal go? When I took the parts off the engine, I didn't notice any seals around the WP.

Thanks
