Super M belt pulley question. Pulley paper preservation??

OK,I have looked at the parts schematic and as far as the bearings and seals,it looks pretty straight fore ward to me as far as rebuilding.

Since I am "getting after it" I thought about trying to do something for the paper in the old pulley. It is nicked a little, some oil soaking, but still very solid and would be usable. I AM NOT looking to to a "concourse restoration" of this pulley, just trying to save and preserve it.

My thoughts was to use brake cleaner to get the oil off of it,slightly sand it,and maybe some linseed oil?(I have heard Janicolson mention using a product called "street shoe" on them???)

Thoughts,opinions,tips????

The oil that's on it is protecting it. You'll do far more damage stripping it off than if you leave it there IMHO.

The best thing you can do is keep the pulley out of the elements.

I do advocate oil based urethane varnish on a pulley that has been cleaned. thinning it to allow penetration. If the paper is oily as is (probably a combination of belt dressing and oils of various origin, I would use the linseed oil cutting it with thinner 50/50 for the first coat, then letting it dry for about few days before putting a final coat on it. The oil will dry slowly and be stickey for a few weeks, but it will be fine. I like the look of having been used. Jim

just put a pulley on my Super H, for looks mostly, doubt I'll use it much.
Most of my tractors live outside, with just a tarp on em.
read all the opinions here to see what others do.
So, I just grabbed a pail of oil and a paintbrush
and went round and round til it wouldn't take anymore.
(it took a lot)
Let it sit til the next day, and did it again.
Looks good and looks like the rain and sun won't affect it much now.

I put used motor oil on mine every year but I use mine so I'm not looking for pretty job - just an effective one.
