Dads" tractor. Calls and says loader wont raise more than about 1" then kicks out. Check fluid, little low so added same difference. Changed filter as well. What I know about Hyd. is it works or don"t. I check my book on 400 and 456 hyd. trouble shoot and see it could be restriction in high pressure line. Does that make sense. I"m doing this over the phone so I know it"s a long shot. Probably making a trip Sunday to get a visual. Thanks for any help.

If the loader is a one way lift (no down pressure, and only 2 hases to the lift cylinders) and if the loader has been slowly getting to this condition (lower lift height every time it is used) or has been sitting for a month raised up, and slowly dropped to the ground, the piston seal in one cylinder has begun leaking past the piston. The loader will try to lift a bit crooked. This causes the hydraulic fluid to be on the top of the piston and prevents the piston from moving (hydraulic lock). There should be vents on the top of each cylinder. Remove the vent, and put a hose in the vent port and in a clean bucket to prevent radical oil splashing.
Slowly raise the loader to expell the oil. If the cylinder packing/seal is leaking very little, this will solve the problem for a while. (put the vent back in, and always lower the loader when stopped or parked) If it leaks dramatically the cylinder will need to be repaired or replaced. Repair should be much cheaper. Jim

What do you mean, "kicks out?"

There are so many little passages and valves and lines and connections in a hydraulic system that it's impossible to guess at what's wrong.

You could have something as simple as a bad coupler or a collapsed hose. Heck, for all we know the bucket is just hooked under something heavy because he pulled into the shed a few inches too far when he parked it last.

Thanks for the advice Jim. I know it"s a crap shoot with this little info but at least you gave me another direction to go.
Jim
