Re: Hood length on H

Tilt top of radiator back and maybe slide the bottom forward in slotted holes of bolster a little if needed. Hoses and top brace changes may be needed to do it. Maybe just need to loosen and move hose.

If the front bolster is setting square with the world (sometimes they don't due to slop in the bolt holes) I would move the tank forward. Otherwise, have a body man add that half inch to either end of the hood if you indeed want to keep that original hood. I replaced the hood and front grill and cap on one of my H's as the original is in such bad condition. The local body shop estimated 1k to recondition it for me as I am not a body man. I would like to have the original hood on the tractor as my dad bought it new in 46 and have been checking to see if vocational schools will do the work for cost of materials. That might be a possibility for you also. I know they do it on cars but haven't received an answer yet on tractor parts.

The grill/radiator looks like it's leaning forward some on top, to me.

It's possible the pads under the radiator have deteriorated, allowing the radiator to tip forward.

Also, it could be that the top radiator hose is too long, pushing the radiator ahead.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the advice. I've been staring at this thing for the last few days and think I've noticed a problem... one that mkirsch pointed out earlier, that the radiator may be leaning. In trying to figure out how to move the radiator, I noticed very faint markings on the water pump inlet neck. It looks like there was a hose on it... about 1/2" or so closer towards the engine than the current hose.

I'm going to mess around with it tonight when I get home. As for the position of the radiator being adjustable, no, I didnt know that it was. The front wheels are on, so it's a tight squeeze to look up underneath the bottom of the bolster and see the radiator mounting bolts. Again, I'll check tonight.

thanks again for the advice!!!

Tractors from S/N 501 - 125250 do not have any provision to adjust the top of the radiator. From S/N 125251 and up you can adjust the position with the brace that runs above the valve cover.

I found on my 1950 "H" that
1. there is a gap between the hood and radiator, sort of like yours, that I can"t get removed,
2. also there is a "ding" in the steering wheel support stand where the gas tank fits, otherwise the gas tank would sit too far back, and it would not fit, it would fit too far to the rear,
3. however, the holes in the hood are centered perfectly in line with the positions of the muffler pipe and air intake pipe, so something is lined up correctly,
4. so I figure something is off, but most of it is right, so I just forget about it.

I was unaware that you could adjust via a brace. My fault for not paying closer attention to the diagrams in the parts manual.. My tractor doesnt have this brace, though that isnt entirely surprising to me. The chassis is a '46 (s/n 234575) but the engine is from a '41 (s/n 74552). That explains quite a few things when i think about it.

Anyway, last night I loosened the top radiator hose and was able to push it back the 1/2" or so that I needed. At the moment, it's held in place with a ratchet strap until I can work out something better. The tab on the radiator brace tie plate that would connect to the radiator tie rod has been cut off, so I'll have to engineer something.

At the end of the day, I think I've got a solution to my issue. I've not looked at the bottom of the radiator yet, so I may need to do some shimming for the pad, but I'm all good for now.

thanks again for all of the advice/suggestions!
