I need to top up the reservoir in my 1954 Super C. All posts about this seem to point to Hytran being the preferred choice. OK, I will happily buy some, but: closest IH dealer is 2 hrs away. That's a bit much for me.

Can Hytran be purchased online or elsewhere? Or can I just stop at the local NAPA and get Valvoline all purpose hydraulic tractor fluid? Or the John Deere dealership nearby and use what they sell?

I use hyguard in all my hydraulics, then no worries.

John Deere HyGard is compatible with Hytran, and a good "backup" if you can't get genuine Hytran and don't want to go with the cheaper "tractor fluid" from the farm and fleet stores.

When selecting fluid, what's important is that the can/jug/pail says that it is CaseIH Hytran Compatible, or MS-1209 compliant.

I don't think "R&O" type fluid is compatible with Hytran.

MKIRSCH - Hy-Tran and Hy-Gard are not really "Compatible". Hy-Tran absorbs water, Hy-Gard does not. I've read on other forums where bad things like friction linings coming un-bonded or grabbing or slipping when one oil was used in place of another. In the case of a live hyd system on a Super C, either Hy-Tran, Hy-Gard, or non-detergent 10W motor oil will work, so no harm done, but that's not always the case. I would not mix the two, Hy-Tran and 10W non-detergent oil maybe.

I bought a knock off brand with all the same specs made for IH tractors at Farm and Fleet, 20 min from me. Some other tractor supply stores may have something like that too. As long as it meets the specs, I see no problem. My brother used to buy Harley oil, till he found out Harley does not make its own oil.

Agreed. And the cheapest knock off brand is still better than anything put in a Super C when it was new.
