Mine is torn apart for a rear end overhaul. I have the axle housings off. My next step is to take the Rear frame top cover/ rockshaft unit off the tractor. The book says to unbolt and lift. What about the draft control linkage? Is there something else to disconnect there?

I guess what I should really be asking, is there anything I need to know about the cover removal or the process of rebuilding the rear end? I've got the IH service manuals, but a little bit of personal experience always gives a better perspective. Tractor Vet? Owen? Somebody who's done it before? Thanks! -Andy

FC Andy, I would love to see a pic of that teardown especially when you get the top off, it will kinda give me an idea of what I'm in for. I was thinking, which I know is bad sometimes, that I could drive the outside race on the bull pinion in and shim it with the proper size of snap ring. Any thoughts on that? I figure it has to be shimmed somewhere right? Why in the sam hill would they make something so difficult to work on!

You don't have to unhook anything inside to pull the top cover. Just pull the draft control lever (not position control lever) all the way back and if it won't stay, tie it there. That will allow the draft control linkage to clear the lower sensing arm. It will come off without pulling lever back but you have to have it back when you install cover. Now, as far as the shims on the brake shaft, bull pinion, it is not really that difficult to pull the axle housing. You don't have to pull the top cover for that job. If shaft is that loose the bearings or possibly the inner retainer may need looking into anyway. They changed design in later models with shims on outside. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks pete! That's the info I was looking for. Didn't mean to not think of you, you are another who can usually help me out. Thanks again! -Andy

JDV, I'll try to get some pictures for 'ya, it'll probably be almost a week until I have time to work on it again. Gotta combine some wheat! -Andy
