Hi,
Can someone tell me if I am missing a piece for this Pittman assembly. I cannot get this to stay attached when I engage the PTO. It seems as if I need something to make the spring functional and put pressure on the latch. Up till now I just had the spring arm going into the hole at end of wood Pittman arm.

Thanks,

It is complete sort of. You need a new spring. Yours is about half the length it should be. --Lee

Hi,
thanks for the help. So is this why I don't have any tension on the spring when I put it in the end of the rod? Where would find one of those new springs?

It looks like a complete set of parts. I think the top mechanism
is upside down in the picture, if that helps.

If the spring really is too short for the hole in the pitman arm
you have, it would seem that putting a plug or some washers
in the hole would help the spring apply pressure. The plug
might need to have a hole drilled down the center to
accommodate the shaft.

At any rate, the mechanism should squish down pretty tightly
onto the ball head-end of the knife. I keep a screwdriver
handy to push into that little hole on the side of the clamp
mechanism, which then provides leverage to open and close
the clamp. To fully close the clamp on mine I need to first
push it most of the way with the screwdriver, then step on the
flat tongue that sticks out toward the knife. You shouldn't be
able to open it with your fingers.

Good luck, and happy mowing!

Not an easy part to show in a picture, but this is how mine looks when it is on and tight.

This is 60 years of haying for this old mower, by the way, cutting the same twenty acres over and over in NH. It connects with a fast hitch to a Super C, both always stored in the barn.

Saw a pic of just the pittman arm on ebay...arm and both ends attached with the spring. 1 john deere no. 5 sickle mower pittman arm with new bushing.......

I think I could repair or replace broken parts on my own for that kinda money.
