How do you tell the difference between 400 and 450 if number wore off serial tag. It is painted like a 450 but sale bill call it a 400

If the blocks have not been messed with the 400 should be a 264 cubic inch engine and the 450 is a 281 cubic inch. Those number can be found on block just about under number one cylinder.

Several ways to tell but T/A clutch operating shaft is one tip off. If it has a number starting with 359 at least part of the tractor is a 400. 450 shaft on left in picture and 400 on right. 450 starts with 366.

A small gas tank will be a 400 but a lot of 400 have had the bigger tank added. Look for the hump under the tank where the sediment bowl goes, that is the bigger tank.

Don't forget that the single/double selectors extend up through the top of the hood on the 450.

I don't remember how to read them, but the large castings, like the wheels, transmission case, rear axle housings, all have build dates cast into them. 450's didn't start production until 1956. Somebody else might know how to read the dates. I remember that the year of the casting is signified by a letter of the alphabet, while the month and day of the month, is signified by the numbers, like: July 9 would be "7-9"...Good luck, Hugh

The early 400s will have a "Z" casting code, which indicates 1954, same as the SMTA. I have a book somewhere that shows the casting codes by year, but I'd have to dig to find it. I will assume that the letter "Z" was followed by "A".
