M - removing starting hand crank

Can the hand crank assembly be removed from an M without removing the upper bolster? I want to remove two unused pulleys in front of the crank pulley and replace with a larger pulley for a char lynn PS unit. Also need to replace alternator belt and there doesn't seem to be any way to do that w/o starting crank coming off.

Unfortunately the bolster has gotta come off to remove the crank ratchet assembly. Also judging from your photo the bolster must come off to remove that double groove sheave on the front of the crank.

The good news is removing the bolster is relatively straight forward. You just need a shop crane, front loader or similar to support it as it comes off.

You might not have to take it all the way off. You may be able jiggle it forward enough to get that pulley off. Take the weight off, undo everything and loosen the front motor mount bolts just enough to pry it away a bit.

I installed the charlynn pulley on my M just a couple of months ago. I had to remove the 8 bolts that hold the bolster assembly to the frame rails, and using a couple of pry bars, move the bolster ahead about 3 inches. The charlynn pulley will not fit in there without doing that.

I beg to differ. I just installed the crank pulley
for a charlynn system on an M less than a month ago
and it will slip in without moving the front bolster
at all. In his case I think he will need to move it
forward a few inches to get that double pulley off.
Rust depending it shouldn"t be too bad of a job.

Yours may have fit. Mine DID NOT.

Thanks for your comments. I don't have the equipment to support/remove the bolster (loader is on the M!)so I'll put off the PS install. But from what you guys are saying I can't even get the alternator belt off w/o moving the bolster forward to remove the hand crank/ratchet. Is that right?

The hand crank ratchet is SUPPOSED to retract into the bolster far enough so it is FLUSH and will not interfere. Use copious amounts of penetrating oil, a hammer, and a pry bar, and a whole lot of patience, and see if you can get that thing to move

The alternator belt is supposed to fit over a pulley on the water pump. You will need to remove the fan belt first, and then you can remove the alternator belt. Both of those belts will need to come off OVER the fan. It CAN be done.

You've already got extra pulleys on the crankshaft, why not use one of them for the power steering pump?

Rusty what did you do to get your fan to clear the pulley on the power steering pump? Also how did you reinstall the water pump drive? Thank You.

Bob

Thanks for the info. I"ll get out the pb blaster and tools and
see if I can move the ratchet. Good question about the pulley.
The pulleys that are on there now are smaller than the char
lynn pulley so the pump won"t produce as much pressure if I
use them. That"s why I wanted to put on the char lynn pulley
but given the hassle of removing bolster I"ll give that a try
assuming I get the ratchet to move.

I did not install the Charlynn power steering pump. Instead, I installed a Vickers, vane style pump. I built my own mounting brackets. The belt to fan clearance was a little close. 2 of the blades had sifficient clearance, 2 did not. Go figure. I chose the easy way out, and figured that if 2 of the blades cleared, then the fan must be bent already, so I "adjusted" a little more clearance into the remaining 2 blades. I think there is supposed to be a spacer that fits between the water pump hub and the fan, but I did not have one, nor did I know where to find it.
