W4 clutch removal help, please!

So my friend is doing a motor swap in his W4 and hes at the point now where he needs to remove the "horse-shoe" shaped bracket that holds the back of the motor to the cast bell housing. He explained that the bracket has dowel pins into the casting of the bell based on the manual and he cannot get them to let loose. Could there be a "hidden" bolt he's missing? Or has anyone else had this issue as they worked on a W4, if so how did you end up getting the bracket off?

Thanks

Look around where the starter was mounted for another bolt. Also those dowels are a tight fit.
Try moving the engine side to side easily to see if you can get movement off the dowels. Once there's movement and leaves a crack use screwdrivers as pinch bars to force the engine off the dowels. Make sure you have the engine well supported. When reinstalling the engine coat the dowels with lubri-plate so it slides one easily. Hal

I dont recall there being a bolt up inside the starter hole, but there could have been one just like the H. Put a nut on the dowels and hit it with the impact, itll come out.

Odds are it's just the fact that the parts have been together since the 1950's, and need a little more persuasion to get them apart.

Hopefully I understand your dilema correctly. It has been a number of years since I removed a W-4 engine but if I recall correctly the dowel pins won't slide out like they normally do on an automobile engine. If they have threads on them then the proper way to take it apart is to pull the dowel pins out first like John M suggested by using a nut on the threaded portion. The impact wrench isn't necessary.....just makes it more fun.

I have put a nut on the dowel pins and pulled them up and out with a catspaw pry bar. They a generaly not stuck that bad.

Thank you all for the suggestions! We were worried that the dowel pins may get stuck in the bracket if the pins were pulled separately from the bracket. Meaning that we thought the shank of the pin may be a bigger diameter than the threaded portion.

Thank you

they twist out with a nut and when you run out of threads put a bigger nut or washers underneath the nut and twist some more till the pin pops out. the threads are only abuout 1/2 in in length and the pin about 1 1/4.
