Stuck In Reverse

Have an 1964 International 504 Utility, gas with T/A. Sons were joy riding yesterday and got the thing stuck in reverse. Shifter will move so it feels like it's in neutral and when clutch is let out tractor moves in reverse only. If shifter is put into a "gear" or what feels like a gear (either 2nd or 3rd) and the clutch is let out, tractor will stall and die without moving. Tractor will drive in reverse without stalling.
Drove home in reverse...help! Any suggestions for an easy (and hopefully inexpensive) fix? Thanks, all.

Try moving the shifter into the reverse position and then move the TA and then try to take it out of reverse and see if it does come out

my c has this happen and we call it stuck between 2 gears. jack up one rear wheel and take the pressure off of the tranny and see if it will shift and work.

Old, Thanks for your quick response. Tried your T/A suggestion, but no go. Shifter feels like it's in neutral and will only move into 2nd or 3rd. Can't get shifter into reverse, 1st, 4th or 5th no matter where the T/A is placed. Trans is still stuck in reverse and tractor will still move in reverse but still stalls when shifter is moved into 2nd or 3rd gear and clutch is let out while trying to move forward. Thanks for your suggestion.

Hey Ken, thanks for the idea. Just got done trying it but it didn't work. Jacked up one rear wheel and the wheel started to gradually move a bit as the pressure was relieved and the wheel came off of the ground. Tried to move the shifter which feels like neutral but trans is in reverse and the shifter only moves into 2nd or 3rd...when I let the clutch out when in 2nd or 3rd the tractor won't move forward and wants to stall. Doesn't matter where the T/A is placed, either. Tried the other wheel with the same negative results. Thanks again for your timely response.

Pull the shift lever housing off, line up the 'neutral gate' so all shift rails are in line and drop your shifter back in so it goes in the neutral gate. Once you take it out you will see how it works, very simple. What most likely has happened your shift lever finger on bottom of lever is worn and slipped over or thru the shift rails.
Be careful when you lift the lever out, there are detent balls under the springs, don't let the springs come up out of their holes. Mark

Your shift lever has jumped out of the rail. Remove the pin holding the shift ever in place then remove the lever and look in and line up the shift rails then you can put the shift lever bac in

I have one that will do that if I am too quick to shift. Try putting it back in reverse and then moving it to neutral to see if you can get it to work. On mine I put it in reverse and then push the shifter all the way to the right while I put it back in neutral. Then it catches. It will be fine for months and months and I forget about it until all of the sudden I am jammed.

Sounds like it is time to pull the shifter and then by hand move the shift rail to neutral and go from there

I have issues with mine often too. I try to move it from reverse to first and it dont wanna leave the gear it is in. First or reverse. So I bounce it in gear until I get her started moving and then clutch in and pull or push it out of gear. I think she needs oil and she needs to have her gears looked at. But if I am in this condition and she works, I shall check oil and keep going as I am. I am aware of the issue and will keep that in mind. BTW, I put myself in a bad position with it stuck in first gear. I was too close to a trailer moving stuff off it and finally was able to move the trailer (flatbed) out of the way and off I went. Just as I said above, I need to be aware of my situation at all times.

This is for an H shifter, yours may be simular.

Notjustair, Told my sons Not to "quick shift" as it's an old tractor, not a sports car! Couldn't get shifter moved to reverse so I ended up taking the shifter out and lining up the rails. Thanks for your suggestions and I hope mine last for years not months & months but I kinda doubt it as it's worn.

Thanks for your solution to my tractor stuck problem, Mark. Pulled the shifter & housing off, lined the rails up properly and dropped the shifter back in and yes, the bottom of the shifter is badly worn/rounded off. Crossed my fingers and started it up and it all shifted properly; neutral, reverse and forward gears. Will have to find another and replace or I'll be "lining up rails" more often than I'd like. Was surprised at the amount of spring pressure on the housing but was careful as you suggested and didn't lose any springs. Thank you again for your prompt help!

Thanks for the picture, rhtx55. Looks very similar to what I found when I took mine apart except mine is badly worn & corners rounded off on the end of the "spade" at the extreme left of your picture. Will have to look for another that is in better condition and replace. Thanks, again.

I would wonder if you cant just weld on that one and grind off what you dont need? Is it cast iron? That would make it not work in my eyes. Not cast iron and you can weld it up and form it.

Sounds like what happened to mine, Den...shifter felt "neutral" but trans was in reverse and I couldn't get the shifter to move. Good idea on always keeping an eye out for the "situation" your getting yourself in. Don't want to have the trans stuck and tractor up against an immovable object with no way out which may require a call to the local crane company!!!

I dragged my 16 ft flatbed sideways and moved it out of the way. I had the disc off of it in the air at the time. Yep NO fun at all.

If it could be welded & ground to spec that would maybe be an easier fix than hunting for an NOS part. I don't weld and the welding shop in town recently closed. Guess I could try both and what ever works first, finding part or finding welder who can handle the job will be what I'll end up doing.
