184 Lo-boy TWO problems

My '78 model 184 is having a problem maintaining engagement of the PTO when I'm mowing.

I have a new battery & the alternator was rebuilt 2 weeks ago but the PTO disengages on it's own & will often re-engage several seconds later.

I'm not sure if I have a short or if the alternator output isn't enough to maintain the PTO.

After checking the wires & connections all appear to be ok.

The alternator is putting out 12.9 to 13.0 VDC. Is this enough to maintain battery voltage?

Anyone experience this?

ALSO,

The tractor regularly jumps out of 1st gear, such as when hitting a small bump or hole.

Is there an adjustment for this?

Thanks,

Gary

Alt should be putting out 13.8V, but the PTO clutch should be able to run off battery power for several hours of operation with no help from the alt. Your alt is putting out some voltage above and beyond.

My guess is you've got a loose connection or a bad wire to the PTO.

On the 1st gear, you might have a worn shifter but you also might have a bad transmission bearing.
