SA Loader Problem

Lately the IH 1000 loader on my SA has started to slowly creep down even when it is not loaded and the tractor engine is running. It does the same thing if I leave it up in the air and shut the engine off. Any idea where to start to trouble shoot this problem?

My first thoughts re either the cylinder or the valve. I have had cylinders stat to leak internally when the seal gets worn or the nut holding the piston on the end of the shaft works loose. The valve could be leaking internally as well. If the cylinder is repairable, it is fairly easy (messy, but easy) to open it up and inspect. If it is welded together, you are skunked on that one. The valve would be a bit more of a job.

According to an old sales brochure I have the 1000 was only available with a single-acting lift cylinder. On this kind of cylinder an internal leak basically means an external leak so you should be able to tell if that is the problem unless your loader has been updated with a double-acting cylinder. You could also install a reliable shut-off valve in the hose between the spool valve and cylinder. After raising the loader and shutting the valve note what happens. If the loader stays up, your problem is in the spool valve. If it still creeps down your problem is in the cylinder.

My money's on the spool valve, due to the single-acting boom cylinder.

What Ed says, means you'd see a puddle of oil form on the ground as the loader crept down. No puddle. Not the cylinder.
