Super C - PTO

I have a 1954 Super C tractor with a six foot finish mower. Should I be using a overriding, overrunning, slip clutch, on the PTO? This is the third year I been using the mower without one. The mower has three blades and are driven by two V-belts.

You really should be using an overide clutch. Use one on my Super C with 5 ft bushog and it works great---just keep the overide clutch well greased.

being a finish mower, it's your option.
They are always a good idea, but I never run them with finish mowers.
A good finish mower will give you a nudge sometimes
when you push in the clutch, but good brakes will stop you.
Not much inertia in finish mower blades, and when the brakes stop the gears, the belt will slip before it could overpower you.

Brush mowers on the other hand need them.
Lots of blade inertia there.

I have Woods finish mower on a Super A, use it several times per summer since 2002. It won't handle big weeds but I have never needed a over running clutch. Not that I am not careful about hitting things.

If you choose to run an overriding clutch, you may need to make your PTO shaft shorter, check the shaft and make sure it doesn't bottom out.
