old gasoline

I recently drained about 5 gallons of old gasoline from the gas tank of a parts tractor of mine. I needed the tank for another project. The gas is from about 2008. It smells like turpentine and is somewhat dark in color, but has no water or foreign materials in it. When you Google "old gasoline" about half the respondents say that you can mix old gas with new gas about 15% (old) to 85% new)and it will burn OK in a carburetor engine like a lawn mower or an old tractor. The other half of the respondents say to avoid burning any old gas because it will foul the spark plugs, gum up the carb, etc. Does anyone here have any experience, either pro or con, using small amounts of old gas in a tank full of fresh gas?

Every time I have run stinky gas in a small engine the intake valve sticks open. After a couple of times removing the head I started using it to start the brush piles.

Old gas works well to kill grass growing between the cracks in sidewalks. The cost per quart is much less than most premixed weed killers.

Exactly!! I tried that mixing with NEW gas trick one time. I'll never do that again.

'stale' gas, I'll strain it, mix it with new and run it.
smell bad, varnished, red dusted, watered,
like the other posters....weed killer, parts cleaner

I won't even think about using the old gas!! I do the kill the weeds trick with it. Burns the heck out of them along buildings and saves trying to mow up so close to the building!

I may have gotten lucky, but I had some old gas from 9.5 years of sitting in my Motohome. I added some stabil after about 7 years and the year I needed to move it, filled up with about 10 gallons of new gas in one tank and what was left in the other tank used it too. I only drove about 50 miles til something went bad but it was not the gas...I think the alternator may have gone or some other part. I had not run it in that long as I was living in it during my time in that location. I agree with the other posters tho.....burning material or weed control.
