c22 sickle mower pitman question

On the end of the pitman that connects to the sickle,there is a part that slides into a hole in the end of the wood.Is there supposed to be a spring on that for tension? What does that do if not hold a spring? Thanks

Yes there is a spring that goes there. It is used to hold the two cups together when you pull the outside lever over center onto the ball of the sickle. Without it, there will be nothing to hold it onto the sickle ball and will fly off when you start up the mower.

I shall send a pic of what the previous owner did for the pitman attachment on the one I purchased from him. I like the idea as I makes it all metal. The one thing about that one they did not do is check all the guides to make sure they were tightened down. I found a few a little bit loose. Disregard. I was looking at a 14 15 Ferguson I have. Apples and oranges. A friend has a C22 for sale too.
