1940 Farmall M input shaft seal

I am kicking around the idea of replacing the transmission input shaft seal on my M. My question is what is the best way to do this. Is it easier to split the tractor, or remove the clutch from underneath? Any other pointers would be appreciated. It looks like once the hydraulic reservoir is out of the way the clutch would be the next obstacle. I have the live hydraulic option on my tractor.

I would say it depend on the lifting equipment you have at your disposal , I prefer splitting because everything is out of your way , I have several loader tractors to lift with .

This job can be done without splitting and without too much hassle. The hardest part will be the tapered bolts that assemble the flex joint between the clutch shaft and input shaft. Pressure plate needs to be just loose enough to slide the clutch disk around so you can get the clutch shaft out of the way. Then you can get at the input shaft assembly. While you're in there might as well do the countershaft seal too.
